Madonna and Guy Ritchie Announce Divorce

After months of media speculation, representatives for pop star Madonna and her husband film director Guy Ritchie have confirmed that the two are divorcing. No further comment was provided.

Madonna and Ritchie were married almost eight years ago. They have two children together – eight year old Rocco and two year old David (who was adopted from Malawi). Madonna also has a 12 year old daughter Lourdes from a previous relationship.

It seems likely that the pair will divorce in London, where they have lived since their marriage. I don’t know yet if there was a prenuptial agreement signed. I guess it would surprise me if someone like Madonna did not have one – but, in Great Britain, as we mentioned regarding the McCartney-Mills split, the prenup would not automatically be enforceable anyway. Judges there have the final say on property division, although a well-crafted prenup signed by two educated, consenting adults would probably go a long way in convincing the judge as to what would be fair.

British newspapers are already estimating that Ritchie could take a $100 million settlement from the divorce.

Madonna has recently been linked by the tabloid magazines to New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez, who settled his own ugly divorce just a few weeks ago.
