Tiger Woods, Elin Nordegren Finalize Divorce 0

About: Athletes

Earlier this week, golfer Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren Woods appeared in a Panama City, Florida courtroom to finalize their divorce. The former couple resided in Orange County, Florida but apparently filed the divorce paperwork in Bay County, Florida in an attempt to avoid heavy media coverage. The divorce paperwork was filed that day, then a local judge waived the mandatory 20-day waiting period and granted the divorce.

The divorce documents indicated that Woods and Nordegren have been separated since November 2009. That was when national media began reporting on an alleged extramarital affair involving Woods and when he crashed his car outside of the marital home after an argument with Nordegren about the adulterous relationship. Within short order, many other women came forward with information regarding additional affairs.

Woods participated in some sort of residential therapy and the couple appeared to be trying to reconcile. Reports indicated that they were renegotiating their prenuptial agreement to Nordegren’s advantage. The original agreement was reportedly to pay her $20 million in the event of a divorce after their 10th anniversary. They only made it six years though.

Ultimately, the couple failed to reconcile. According to the court documents, Woods and Nordegren reached a settlement agreement in very early July. It is reported that Nordegren received $100 million in the settlement.

She will also receive child support for the couple’s two young children, Sam and Charlie. They will reportedly share legal custody of the children. Some reports indicate that part of the negotiations involved Nordegren’s ability to take the children to and from her native Sweden without any trouble from Woods. (She bought a $2.3 million home in Sweden shortly after the adultery scandals broke.)

Nordegren’s maiden name was legally restored to her.
